Frequently Asked Questions

If you have a question that isn’t answered below or elsewhere on the site, please do contact us…

What do I bring, what do I wear?

For the introductory lesson, a bottle of water and comfortable gym clothing is optimal, preferably without any sharp or jagged styled edges or zips. Less jewellery, the better. Thereafter, for anyone that is interested in developing their self defence skills, a mouthguard and groin guard are essential for any kind of contact training or sparring. Chest protectors and shin guards are also worth considering.

I’m nervous, I’ve never done anything like this before, what should I expect?

All are welcome and the more beginners that we can help, the better. Classes contain a range of activities including fitness drills & communication skills as well as practical training in the key techniques. You’ll be looked after and you’ll also be able to choose if you prefer to train with a partner in hand-to-hand defence or just to start off with some bag work until you’re ready to progress.

Are you teaching people to fight?

Actually, it’s always our preference to walk away. That also requires inner strength and confidence. So, we start by recommending Avoidance and Awareness. If you can escape, especially with knife threats (running away is by far the best option), then we teach students that they should do just that. But if circumstances dictate that Engagement is the only option, we’ll try to equip you to respond to that threat as best you can. We refuse to teach people if we think that they may misuse the skills we give them.

Is there a minimum age?

For 1-1 classes, there is no minimum age but a guardian or a parent has to accompany the child. For Group classes, we typically accept kids from 8 years old and upwards. For all those under 16, a guardian or parent has to accompany the child.

Do I need to be physically fit?

If you have any medical condition or injuries, we would suggest that you seek clearance from your GP or Medical Consultant before taking part in this kind of training. In general terms, there is no requirement for any level of physical fitness. You will be required to complete a Fitness & Training Declaration, as we would need to understand any medical conditions you might have, before we commence training. However, all being well, it is very likely that your fitness will improve with regular attendance to these classes.

How do we pay the class fee?

We can occasionally accept cash on the day. Otherwise in advance by credit card or bank transfer.

What is the cancellation policy?

No penalty if lesson booking is cancelled with at least 24 hours notice.
